In the first part of our series of articles (one of three) on the famous album cover, talk about a couple of iconic Beatles album covers and some controversial album covers by other artists. We will continue our discussion with the second part of our series.
The Rolling Stones make our list for her album 1968 called "Beggars Banquet". It was the first deck that do not have a group photograph, instead of the Stones decided to use a picture of a bathroom ugly, dirty, graffiti-laced walls. The record label in the UK (Decca) and the U.S. label, London Records, both men opposed the cap (which was considered bad taste) and a period of three months of bitter legal battle began. The Rolling Stones lost the battle and the album was replaced by an elegant formal party invitation (but coverage was restored to CD pressed in the mid 80's).
Naughty "bathroom behavior" album cover first appeared in 1966 when the "Mama's & the Papa's, released their LP called" If you can believe your eyes and ears ". The cover, an image of power of the "flower" foursome engaged in a tub of age with a toilet, apparently received so many complaints that the record company (Dunhill) was forced to run replacement coverage, with graphics that promote success of the group, blocking the offending toilet. They even went so far as to issue a new cover, this time removing the bathroom.
The middle fingers have always been taboo in the album covers and indignation began in 1957, when Capitol Records released an album by the doo wop group the Five "Keys." Covering the innocent, the vocal group photo posing with nice suits. But it seems that the index finger singer Rudy West was imagined by some as a specific part of the male anatomy. So he took the decision in the next numbers to have the finger in question airbrushed out.
"" Moby Grape's self-titled album in 1967, also had a finger of the hand of the prominence displayed incorrectly, but the album cover was quickly airbrushed by Columbia Records.
A misplaced (?) Or Finger thumb caused another uproar in 1971 when Warner Brothers released "," Alice Cooper's new album called "Love It To Death". His "gesture" not taken too well and was censured, the middle finger to be retouched away. In fact, four different versions of the cover there, apparently in the photo of your thumb could be confused with a specific part of the male anatomy.
"David Bowie" cover art with half dog, half-Bowie figure (painted by Guy Peellaert) for their 1974 album called "Diamond Dogs" caused a stir. Apparently the record company (RCA) did not like the fact that the "Bowie-dog" was anatomically correct and had the offending appendage airbrushed out on subsequent broadcasts.
Apparently, removing gum from a woman's bare chest is a felony, or at least a reason to reissue an album cover. More or less, that's what that the German heavy metal band of the "Scorpions" discovered in 1979 with his latest album called "Loverdrive. The album cover features a man and a woman sitting in the backseat of a car, the man in the removal of chewing gum shocking in the chest. Subsequently reissued with a cover black with a blue scorpion on it (luckily the scorpion was fully clothed). The band had another album ( "Virgin Killer") cover both rejected due a cover of a naked young man.
In 1994, the scandal found Crowes rock band called "Black" because their album cover "Amora" pubic hair showed a photograph of Hustler magazine. The close of a woman "in the mid-section" in a bikini, apparently, has too hair and the public uncomfortable. Pressured by powerful conservative chain retail, the record company (Universal) had to re-issue a alternative coverage, only a bikini on a black background (no offense to the hair).
